When the Stagecoach  Came to Orcutt

Somewhere close to where the 135 Expressway crosses over Clark Ave. once stood the little town of La Graciosa.  Just the name has a romantic feel to it, for La Graciosa, means “The Graceful One.”   La Graciosa was a stage stop on the Central Coast Stage Line.  Not much is known about this early  Gringo settlement in northern Santa Barbara County.  The Central Coast Stage Line established this scheduled stop on its journey from Los Alamos to Guadalupe.

The town of La Graciosa was established around 1868.  From dusty records, there was a school, a church, a post office, and of course, a saloon.  In 1870 the town was surveyed for 40 lots, expecting to make La Graciosa a “full-fledged” town.  This never happened, as cattle and land baron, Henry Mayo Newhall, petitioned and received the Todos Santos Rancho, which included La Graciosa.  Newhall brought a $40,000 law suit against the residents, and had the sheriff evict the residents.  Newhall then had the town destroyed.
